New sports complex might be built in Collier County
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - Collier County is looking at possibly spending over $30 million for phase one of a new sports complex.
The project would be located off of City Gate Blvd South and Brennan Drive.
Lynn Nolan, who has lived in Collier County for 20 years, thinks Collier County needs a sports complex.
"I think it's a really a good idea to have as many facilities for children to get out and run around and play and keep them healthy," Nolan said.
The multi-use Collier County sports complex is creating buzz and excitement.
"People like their sports, basketball, baseball - all sports," Naples resident Wendell Duclos said. "I just go for all of them."
The county has cleared out 66 acres, cutting down trees and digging a lake for the complex.
The Deputy County Manager Nick Casalanguida said the need for a complex like this one is great.
"Our fields here in Collier County are above 90 percent utilization rate. In other words they are maxed out," Casalanguida said. "We're turning away tournaments [and] we're turning away residents being able to access our facilities."
The final rendering for the project includes nearly 180 acres.
The first phase of the project will include five fields, a maintenance building, a welcome center, a market and restrooms.
The county wants to spend less than $80 million on the project. More than half of the money is expected to come from tourist development dollars.
The hope is a new complex will bring more events to the county.
"Football university championships will transition to the sports complex and our management company plans on attracting national events here," Casalanguida said.
The first phase is expected to be completed in May 2020.
